“The Future of Mathematics Engagement”

If you work with a math museum or want to create one; if you design, create, or operate math exhibits; or if you are involved or want to be involved in math outreach or creative math programming, then this is the conference for you!  Join us for four days of sharing, networking, and learning — plus an amazing glacier walk with views of natural formations and sweeping vistas — as we gather in Les Diablerets, Switzerland for the fifth biennial MATRIX (and third joint MATRIX x IMAGINARY conference), from August 31 to September 4.

Program Highlights

  • Keynotes by Cedric Villani, the winner of the Simon Norton Math Outreach Prize, and another speaker to be announced
  • A panorama of new math museums
  • Panels on funding and accessibility
  • Award ceremony for the first winner of the EMS Simon Norton Prize for Mathematics Outreach
  • Lightning talks by participants
  • Masterclasses and co-creation workshops
  • A glacier walk with dinner on top of the glacier

  • A permanent project showcase available to all participants
  • You can also join us in the Math’émerveille math festival in Geneva, on September 5, and even showcase your project

All-Inclusive Registration

Registration for MATRIX x IMAGINARY is all-inclusive, providing for full lodging and meals.  Conference fees cover: conference access; four nights of accommodation; three meals per day (starting with dinner on Day 1 and ending with lunch on Day 4); coffee breaks; social activities; and a special dinner atop the glacier.

Registration will close on July 15.  Space is very limited and will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Conference Hotel

A block of hotel rooms in Les Diablerets has been set aside at preferential prices for conference attendees.  There is a limited number of rooms, which will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please register early.

There are many ways to participate in the conference.  All calls below are open to all participants.  Submit your proposal before June 4.  Selected speakers will be contacted before the end of June.

Do you want to present your current mathematics engagement activities, an upcoming project, or a new idea?  We invite you to give a six-minute lightning-talk.

The call is open to all topics, but we encourage you to submit a talk connected to one of our featured topics:

Host a Masterclass or Workshop

We invite you to give a masterclass or run a co-creation workshop at the conference.  Each workshop will run for a total time of 4 hours (two afternoon slots of two hours each).

Do you have expertise, craft, or unique skills that would be useful to other attendees?  Would you like to lead participants in a short math-engagement project during the conference?

The call is open to all topics, but we encourage you to submit a proposal connected to one of our featured topics:

Be part of our Project Showcase!

Submit a proposal

The Project Showcase will be a permanent space during the conference, where participants can:

  • Show a math communication object
  • … or mathematical art.
  • Present a hands-on or digital exhibit.
  • Pose a math puzzle.
